Example text

To sum up: all communication of the contents of the mind is language, communication in words being only a particular case of human language and of the justice, poetry, or whatever underlying it or founded on it. (SW 1:62)] Benjamin is using a concept of language here that includes every significant utterance. However, everything existing in the world expresses itself in some sort of language. Things express themselves in their language, which is not the language of man like words and writing, but it is nonetheless the signature of the thing, which Benjamin calls its language.

In the following paragraphs Benjamin constructs a kind of story that creates a mythos of its own. He argues that God’s language is inclusive in the sense that when he speaks, as he does in the first book of Genesis, he creates holistic, complete figures at the same time. ” For Benjamin, this second faculty of language, as a reflection of successful creation, now characterizes human language as it was spoken in paradise, when Adam received the task of naming everything. This faculty was lost when paradise was lost to humankind, but it was not completely destroyed.

26 The term “critique” in the period of Goethe and the Romantics is strongly influenced by Immanuel Kant and the neo-Kantians as well as by the Romantics and later by the left-wing Hegelians, as has been shown in the “critical theory” of Max Horkheimer and his colleagues at the Institute of Social Research, an extension of the Frankfurt School. BENJAMIN’S CRITICISM OF LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE Œ 37 Benjamin forged his literary and philosophical style in the context of Kantian, Romantic, and Hegelian thought.
